We all suffer from what can be referred to as a “Smile Emergency”; this could be anything from sensitive teeth to chipped teeth
What many of us don’t know that these are mainly self –inflicted and we are ruining our smile without realising it.
Luckily, thanks to modern dentistry these emergencies can be easily treated at home or at the surgery without causing too much inconvenience.
There are a number of these “Emergencies”

CHIPPED TEETH

A chipped tooth can not only be painful but also causes cosmetic problems for us all

Cause: A chipped tooth can be caused by any number of things from chewing on hard sweets or a sporting injury

Treatment: A chipped tooth requires a trip to the dentist but thankfully it can be treated quickly by your dentist.

If for any reason you can not get to your dentist right away there are a number of things you can do until you can get there.

1. Call your Dentist to Book Appointment
2. Take an over the counter pain killer to relieve the pain and discomfort
3. Rinse your mouth out with warm water to kill bacteria
4 Use an icepack to control swelling
5 Resist the urge to chew ice cubes as this could further damage the chipped tooth

Once at the dentist there are a number of treatments depending on the level of damage

1. Bonding – This could be an option if the chip is affecting less than one-third of the tooth surface.
2. If the damage to the tooth covers about half the tooth dentist may use a stronger material such as porcelain
3. In the event the tooth is damaged beyond all repair there are a number of options including the use of Veneers.

SENSITIVE TEETH

Sensitive teeth affect millions of people and can cause a lot of discomfort.

The effects of sensitive teeth normally only lasts a couple of days and any pain can normally be treated by using over the counter pain killers.

The thing about sensitive teeth is that is normally caused by the sufferer and can be avoided.

One of the main causes of sensitive teeth is over bleaching when using home whitening kits.

Many people leave the bleach on too long or exceed the recommended usage.

This is easily avoided by ensuring you read the instructions carefully and follow the instructions

Brushing with toothpaste or using mouthwash that contains calcium will help avoid the sensitivity caused by bleaching

There are of course other causes of sensitive teeth such as drinking acidic drinks such as soda and the grinding of teeth.

Talk to your dentist about sensitive teeth on your next visit.

CAVITIES

One of the most painful “emergencies” is a cavity. Most of the time we don’t even realise we have one until the pain starts.

A cavity can take a few months to form so regular trips to the dentist can prevent us suffering from the pain caused  when they become deep.

Treating a cavity at home is always the first step , If the pain starts, start by taking an over the counter pain killer and continue to  with a fluoride toothpaste and floss, Drinking tap water as opposed to bottled water can also help as the fluoride in the water will help.

If after trying these methods you are still suffering from pain and discomfort you must contact your dentist right way.

If you are lucky the cavity may still be small enough and not yet seeped passed the enamel and your dentist can use a fluoride treatment to harden your tooth, reversing the decay and avoiding the need to fill the cavity

If however the cavity is larger it will need to be filled. Today with the advances in dentistry the materials used are very natural looking and therefore means less cosmetic problems.

Another thing you should do it ask your dentist about a dental sealant, which is a clear plastic that can be painted onto your teeth to help prevent decay in the future although this does not replace the need for brushing and flossing.

STAINING ON TEETH

One thing many of us suffer from is staining on our teeth which is caused by a number of things

One of the worst causes is Red Wine which due to the pigments in the red wine, just one glass of red wine can lead to staining. The pigments in the wine attach themselves to the sticky film of plaque that covers our teeth.

The staining caused by a single glass can normally be removed by using mouthwash after drinking the wine.

However the more exposure to the wine, the harder it will be to remove the staining without treatment.

DON’T brush your teeth straight after drinking red wine... The reason being is that wine contains a lot of acid that can dissolve the teeth and brushing with spread the acid around mouth that could lead to dental erosion. Before brushing your teeth drink a glass of water to neutralise the acid

How To TreatIt.
Initially use mouth wash and regular brushing can remove the staining.

Another method recommended by some dentists is to use a little Baking soda mixed with Hydrogen Peroxide but you must make sure you do not scrub to hard

If the staining remains then teeth whitening will be needed to remove the staining

This can either be done at the dental surgery and this is the fastest way to restore your teeth or to use home whitening

The benefit of the dentist performing the treatment is that it is quick and can lighten the teeth to up to ten shades in one hour, the drawback of this is that at the end of the hour the results are what they are.

One option is to have the initial treatment done at the surgery and continue the treatment using a custom made treatment from your dentist to use at home.

Consult with your dentist to determine what is best for you as everyone has their own requirements.

One thing that needs to be mentioned. There are a number of kiosks offering teeth whitening. These can be found in a number of places such as airports and shopping malls.
Also places like tanning salons and spas also offer teeth whitening, It is advised by many dentists  that it is best not to have treatment in these locations due to a number of reasons including the strength of the bleached used and the level of training the technicians have received
